From Factory to Shelf

ceylon tea from factory to shelf

After tea leaves leave the factory, they enter the next phase of production, which includes evaluation, selection, blending, packing, and preparation for export or retail. These steps are essential for ensuring that the final product maintains consistent flavour, aroma, and quality across different batches, seasons, and markets.

The first stage is procurement, where professional tasters evaluate hundreds of samples, either through auctions or direct buying. Tasters assess key attributes such as liquor colour, aroma, strength, briskness, leaf appearance, and overall balance. Accurate evaluation at this stage is critical, as it determines which batches meet the specific profiles required for different blends, regions, or market standards.

Blending follows, providing uniformity across batches that naturally vary in flavour and character. Blending allows tea brands to maintain a consistent taste profile throughout the year. This process requires technical expertise, knowledge of tea behaviour, and an understanding of how different varieties interact to achieve the desired balance and quality in the final product.

Packing and preparation for distribution are equally important. Facilities operate under strict food safety protocols, controlling humidity, storage temperatures, hygiene standards, and handling procedures. Packaging materials including tea bags, tins, canisters, envelopes, or loose leaf packs are chosen based on shelf-life requirements, market expectations, and consumer convenience. Even minor elements such as filter paper, tags, and sealing methods influence the freshness and brewing experience of the tea.

Regulatory compliance and logistics complete the production process. Different countries have unique labelling, documentation, and certification requirements that must be met for export. Additionally, proper container loading, moisture control, and careful transit management ensure that the tea reaches retailers in optimal condition. By the time the product reaches consumers, it has passed through multiple quality control layers, expert evaluation, and precise handling, all of which guarantee a consistent and enjoyable cup.
