The Distinction of Tea from the Ruhuna Region

Dondra Head Lighthouse, Blue sky, Sri Lanka, Ruhuna province, Tea growing region

The Ruhuna district is adorned by Palm fringed beaches, crimson sunsets, lagoons, endless fields of salt and low-lying hills. Positioned at the foothills of the central mountain range, this region enjoys a tropical sun that bathes wild scrub jungles and scattered grassy plains up to the Uva province. Ruhuna boasts a uniquely distinct trait – its Full-Flavored black tea. Experiencing both dry and wet climatic influences, this Southern brew, a latecomer to tea cultivation in the 1900s, offers a plethora of flavours. The resulting liquor, with a deep brown hue reminiscent of henna or mahogany, carries a marked distinctiveness in flavour. Ruhuna takes pride in producing various leaf styles and sizes, including the coveted ‘silver tips’ – a testament to its commitment to quality orthodox tea.
