Brewing the perfect cup of green tea requires a bit more attention to detail compared to other tea varieties. The delicate, grassy flavours of green tea can be easily overwhelmed if the water temperature is too hot or the steeping time is too long. Pay attention to the water-to-tea ratio as well. For loose leaf tea, a general guideline is one teaspoon of tea per 8 ounces of water. If you’re using tea bags, follow the instructions on the packaging.
To make green tea the right way, start by using freshly drawn, filtered water. Bring the water to a gentle simmer, not a full rolling boil. The optimal water temperature for green tea is around 80°C. Next, add your green tea leaves or tea bag to the hot water and steep for 2-3 minutes. Avoid over-steeping, as this can make the tea taste bitter and astringent. Once the tea has steeped, pour it into your favourite cup and enjoy the fresh, vibrant flavour of properly brewed green tea.
