Tea and its Growth in the Kandy Region

Kandy, City, Evening, Lights, Sri Lanka, Tea growing region

Kandy, also known as the ‘Great City,’ served as the last kingdom of ancient Ceylon is situated in the central highlands. Surrounded by lush green mountains, Kandy enjoys a moderate cool climate, influenced by two monsoonal weather patterns. With three months of rain followed by three dry months, this neutral zone is shielded by the Knuckles Mountain Range and the Hanthana Mountain Range, acting as natural fortresses against fierce winds and heavy rains. Kandy’s ‘mid-grown’ Ceylon Tea, thriving in misty mountains and dew-kissed valleys, echoes a range of flavours and styles. The seasonal nuances and changing precipitation at different elevations mould and magnify the tea’s versatility. Despite its relatively small leaf size, the resulting liquor is rich in flavours and strength, embodying the perfect brew reflective of its environment.
