Sustainable Tea Revival in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka’s tea industry is currently grappling with challenges such as declining yields and waning interest among farmers. To combat this, the Rehabilitation of Degraded Agricultural Lands Project (RDALP) has taken proactive measures in the Nuwara Eliya, Badulla, and Kandy Districts. Their primary focus is rehabilitating degraded agricultural lands and revitalizing tea yields through sustainable land management practices.

In collaboration with the Tea Small Holdings Development Authority (TSHDA), RDALP is spearheading the revival of the tea industry. They are implementing tailored Sustainable Land Management (SLM) practices specifically designed for smallholding farmers. These practices encompass the use of organic fertilizers, strategic shade management, innovative intercropping methods, and a strong emphasis on soil conservation. By addressing critical issues like soil erosion and low plant density, these initiatives aim to create a sustainable and resilient tea cultivation ecosystem.

RDALP and TSHDA are empowering farmers by equipping them with essential knowledge and necessary resources to revitalize the tea industry. Through collaborative efforts, they strive to ensure the long-term sustainability and continued contribution of the tea sector to Sri Lanka’s economy. Farmers in Pambadeniya have already witnessed the positive impact of these sustainable land management practices, serving as a testament to the potential revival and growth of Sri Lanka’s tea industry.
